OT Detailed Lists

These lists include all the commentaries mentioned in the OT Must-Buy Lists, plus other highly-ranked and useful volumes. The recommendations for each Bible book are divided into three lists:

  1. A detailed list of the most highly- and widely-praised commentaries
  2. A selective “also worth considering” list of authors whose volumes receive praise but from fewer sources–to which I have added additional modern volumes that John Evans considers both a) “suggested for purchase” or “a worthwhile purchase, but not a first priority” and also b) “a leading commentary, influential for evangelical scholarly discussion”
  3. A highly selective list of “important forthcoming” volumes

The audience, purpose, sources, and abbreviations remain the same as with the “Must Buy” lists, with the same limitations. The letters at the end of each listing indicate the author’s perspective and the ideal readers. (E.g. F/J-SP indicates the author writes from a Faith perspective and is Jewish, and the ideal reader is a Scholar or trained Pastor. See “Abbreviations Used” for more details.)

    • Note: A clear conservative consensus for a technical Daniel commentary has not yet developed. Given complex questions of authorship, date, genre, and prophecy, this is hardly surprising. Some of the best volumes (Collins, Goldingay) reflect liberal assumptions. Others are dated (Baldwin, Young). In my own library, I like the conservative, Christocentric, and semi-technical Steinmann (Concordia Commentary, 2008, 628pp. [amazon template=add to cart1&asin=0758606958]) better than either Longman (fuzzy on crucial points of debate) or Young (dated), and am happy to note that Fee and Stuart agree, choosing Steinmann—along with Duguid (sermonic) and Miller (best of Dispensationalism)—as the most technical volume on their latest list. Lucas (Apollos, 2002, 359pp.) is another popular recent choice, though clearly less conservative (and technical) than Steinmann. Perhaps Wooden (below) will gain widespread conservative praise?
